Ask James Should I switch careers
Ask James Should I switch careers by James Reed Considering a career change, but not sure where to start? In his monthly column, career coach and Chairman of reed.co.uk, James Reed, shares his expert advice to help you tackle your biggest career concerns. In this months column, James gives his advice on how to switch careersThe questionHi James,Ever since I finished my education Iâve been working in the Health sector.I dont enjoy it as I did before. That is why I want to start fresh and try something different.I have an NVQ Level 3 and Im very good at planning and organising so I was thinking something like PA, organiser, etc.Can you please give me some advice on what to do, is that the right career for me, can I even apply for that kind of job without any other qualifications and experience?Thank you.Kind regards,KatarinaThe answerHi Katarina,Thank you for getting in touch with your query.Hereâs a handful of things you should consider before changing careers:Weigh up all your optionsChanging careers is a big step, so itâs important to give it plenty of consideration before you make the leap. Is it just the place youâre working in or the particular role that youâre not enjoying? If you could be happy doing your job in the Health sector elsewhere, then you may want to think twice before leaving the industry behind. However, if youâre certain that itâs the industry thatâs the problem, then changing careers might be just the thing you need to do to help you start loving Mondays again. Be clear about the type of work youâre looking for on your CV Once youâre certain that you want to change careers, the next step is to start looking for work. However, it can be a daunting task when you havenât got experience in the field. Thatâs where your CV can help. When writing your CV, you should include details of what youâre looking for, not just the work youâve done before. Your personal statement is the place to state what youâre aiming for in your career, so make the mos t of it to reaffirm your desire to move into a Personal Assistant role. You can then use your cover letter to expand on the reasons for your career change, and why you see this role as the perfect change for you.Focus on your transferable skillsYour personal statement should also be used to outline what you have to offer the employer. In the case of a career change, you should do this by focusing on your skills and/or major achievements before talking about previous work experience.Once again, try to provide examples that are applicable to the role in question, which you have picked up in other jobs. For example, adaptability, management skills, problem solving, presentation and interpersonal skills are all desirable qualities to have, no matter what the industry.Consider temporary work as a first step into your new careerPeople often think of temporary work as something thatâs just a stop gap, but doing temp work can actually be a great way into a new career. Working as a temp giv es you the opportunity to learn about a new industry and helps you to gain the experience you need to take the next step on your career path.If you decide to take on temp work, make sure you take advantage of every chance you have to learn new things about your company and the industry youâre working in. By the time your contract is up, youâll be prepared to make the leap into a permanent role in the field.Good luck with your job search! With good wishes,JamesIf youâd like James to answer your career query, tweet your question to @James_A_ReedLooking for more interview advice? Recruitment in Song
Recruitment in Song When it comes to a lyrical genius, they dont come any more talented than Canadian singer Drake. But did you know his songs could help you when it comes to recruitment? Have a read of these and see if they will help you bag your next talent. 1. We could do it real big, bigger than you ever done it | Best I Ever Had A great job advertising should have the same effect as a great movie trailer â" it should make you want to jump out of your seat and go for it. In HR, the motto is simple: Create job advertisements that make your potential new employee feel excited and motivated by the opportunity to work in your company. 2. The good ones go if you wait too long. So, you should go, before you stay too long | Good Ones Go Timing plays a huge role in recruiting, so, try not to leave the candidates just hanging around waiting for your answer. Give realistic deadlines and be available all throughout the process. In Confuciusâ words âDont do unto others what you dont want done unto you.â 3. Iâm more than just a number, I doubt youâll find another | Find Your Love We are all special (just ask your moms!). Nevertheless, during the recruiting process candidates tend to feel like theyâre just another number and a bit lost in the sauce. Customize your communication, as this creates a bond between the company and each individual candidate. 4. I need someone thatll help me think of someone besides myself |Girls Love Beyonce Recruit talent, not staff! Nowadays HR people love to talk about big data and assess everything. In the words of Peter Drucker âYou cannot manage what you do not measureâ. Even though itâs amazing to have a lot of information on candidates, great recruiting isnât just about the numbers. 5. I learned a lesson from it though, you never see it coming you just get to see it go | Fireworks Yikes! It really hurts when you have recruited someone and after a couple of months, they leave without any warning. A big turnover rate is an HR nightmare; therefore, great recruitment can be useless if you donât have a proper onboarding process in place for the new employees. 6. You know life is what we make it, and a chance is like a picture, itâd be nice if you just take it | Unthinkable Be creative all throughout the process! Old recruiting techniques can seem a little boring and outdated. If you want to attract the best and the brightest candidates to your company, youâll need to put in some effort and think outside the box. Take a risk and break the status quo, predictability can be a good thing up to a certain point, but eventually, it becomes restrictive.
